The University of Phoenix was established in the year 1976 by Dr. John Sperling with the motto of the University being “Thinking Ahead”. The University falls into the category of private universities being run as for profit organizations. The University is located in Phoenix, in the State of Arizona in the United States and is the largest private university in North America. The Higher Learning Commission certifies the University of Phoenix as a part of the North Central Association.
The University of Phoenix is diverse and incorporates a number of concepts, principles, subjects and fields of study. The College of Arts and Sciences as run by the University of Phoenix has gained much acclaim and praise in furthering the fields of Arts and Sciences as equal academic options, complementary to one another and not contradictory, as is widely believed.
A balance between the Arts and the Sciences must be achieved in order to excel in all spheres in life. A combination of the two can help to build a nation and a world where social, economic, political and cultural justice is prevalent and where all people live as equals in harmony.
It was with the achievement of this very aim that the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Phoenix was set up. The principle behind the college is to enable the students to be able to enrich their development as individuals and expand their creativity and innovative activity by using skills of understanding, comprehension, knowledge, reasoning and analytical deduction.
The College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Phoenix provides facilities that enable students to further their expertise and knowledge in not only their chosen field of study but also to understand and appreciate and evaluate the dependency and correlation of all fields on one another.
The College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Phoenix conducts programs which incorporate five interconnected fields of the liberal arts: sciences, humanities, mathematics, social science and communication arts.
It is believed that the development of professional skills and techniques is only possible by striking the balance between the study of sciences and the study of arts as the two fields when combined help to acquire skills of critical thinking, logical reasoning, assimilation and processing of information, effective communication and innovative ideas. These skills are all fundamental for achieving optimum performance and results in all fields and professions as they enable the individual to put his best foot forward.
The skills learnt from the study of Arts and Sciences enriches life in all spheres: academic, professional, personal and social. The Liberal Arts are an important field of education, one that not only enhance the social and professional opportunities of the individual but also promote personal growth and development. The study of the Liberal Arts involves a number of disciplines such as science, history and social science. Education in these fields is conducted on an individual scale and also on a level that highlights the mutual dependence of these fields upon one another. While other fields strive to teach students specialized skills pertaining to the specific field, an education in the Liberal Arts signifies holistic development and social, psychological, emotional, cognitive and professional growth. The Liberal Arts add manifold to the individual: both by enhancing existing skills and adding new dimensions to the individual’s character and personality. Hence, it is safe to say that the Liberal Arts teach skills that enable the individual to succeed in life.
The College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Phoenix offers degree courses and programs at three levels: the Associate level, the Undergraduate level and the Graduate level.
At the Associate level students can pursue a total of three course programs in the Arts and Sciences category and the Psychology field. Under the Arts and Science category the programs available are the Associate of Arts in Communications and the Associate of Arts in General Studies. Under the category of Psychology, students can acquire an Associate of Arts in Psychology.
At the Undergraduate level students can pursue two course programs in the category of Arts and Sciences and also in Psychology. Under the group of Psychology, students can acquire a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. While studying Arts and Sciences, students receive a Bachelor of Science in Communication.
At the Graduate level students receive the degree of Master of Science in Psychology.
